Sinopse
The Nantes museum of natural history today hosts an important collection of minerals which was used not only to make, but also to complement in material form the geological map of the department. In an unusual manner, the mapping effort of the Loire-Inférieure, of which Nantes as the chief city, was conducted from the Natural History museum and by the successive directors Dubuisson (1810-1836) and Cailliaud (1836-1870). The documentation and collected objects left by the two naturalists and heads of the museum allow to shed a new, interesting light on the relationship between collecting and mapping. In this paper, I will seek to demonstrate how the use of a variety of documents, understood in a broad sense and including collection objects, papers, artefacts, but also museum architecture, is useful to interrogate categories such as the maps or the museum collection.
